*Protecting our Biobay (Bug Spray Policy)
Mosquito Bay is a protected natural treasure, and we work hard to keep it glowing β¨
π«therefore please do not use bug spray or sunscreen, the chemicals found in insect repellents /sunscreen pollute the water and can ruin our clear kayaks.
Despite the name, Mosquito Bay is not full of mosquitoes β youβll learn the real story behind the name during the tour π
If you need to use insect repellent, make sure its 100% natural and DEET-free.
Thank you for helping us protect this incredible ecosystem π
β¨οΈBioluminescence is a natural phenomenon that is always present in the bay, but how bright it appears depends greatly on natural light conditions, especially the moon phase.
Why the Moon Mattersπ
The darker the night, the brighter the bioluminescence appears to our eyesβ¨Moonlight, even though beautiful, it adds light to the sky ,which effects visibility .
A simple way to picture it: itβs like a glow stick in a room with the lights on. The glow stick is still glowing, but itβs meant to glow in the dark, so doesnβt stand out until you turn the lights off. The same thing happens with the light from the moon and how it effects how we perceive bioluminescence
π Before vs. After the Full Moon
Not all moon phases affect visibility the same way
β’ Week before the full moon:
The moon rises earlier in the evening, meaning there is more moonlight during tour hours. This can make the glow less visible
β’ Week After the full moon:
The moon rises later at night, allowing for darker skies during our tours. This creates better viewing conditions and a more vibrant bioluminescent experience.
β Best Time to Visit
For the best visibility, we recommend booking:
* Day of the new moon!
* 10 days surrounding the new moon
* The week after the full moon on the early tour times
πWe are CLOSED for three days during the full moon:
β’ The day before the full moon
β’ The day of the full moon
β’ The day after the full moon
During this time, the moon is very bright and significantly affects visibility. While the bioluminescence is still there, it is harder to see due to the strong moonlight.
